It includes statistics for all of the fatalities, as well as abstracts and illustrations. From January 1996 through December 1997, 173 miners and contractors died at coal operations. Of the 173 fatalities, 32 fatalities involved contractors which contributed to 18 percent of all fatalities during this period.
