Mesdag and his hospitality were known to Americans who sought him out, and who found him easy of access. He was known also personally here in this country, to which he made two visits, the first one in a representative official capacity at the time of the Columbian Exposition in 1893, and again when the hudson-fulton Memorial Exhibi tion was held in this city. On the occasion of the former visit be was already famous as a painter, although it was said of him that he never exhibited his work until he was fifty years old. As a wealthy banker and broker, inheriting comfortable means from his father, he was able to pursue his art in leisurely manner and even before becoming noted as a painter to indulge his taste in art as pleased him, which he continued to do to the end.
