When WWII started, Scholz was an Oberleutnant and Staffelkapitn in JG 54. Together with his Staffel, he flew in the Polish and Western Campaigns, the Battle of Britain, and the war against Russia. Scholz is one of last surviving members of the Legion Condor and also one of the last major personalities of the Luftwaffe still able to tell of his experiences.
