Book excerpt: Because the Fed. gov't. relies on commercial satellites (CS), security threats leading to their disruption or loss would put gov't. functions (incl. communications and info. transmission) at significant risk. The GAO was asked to review, among other things, the techniques used by Fed. agencies to reduce the risk assoc. with using CS, as well as efforts to improve satellite system security undertaken as part of Fed. efforts in critical infrastructure protection. GAO recommends that steps be taken to promote the appropriate development and implementation of policy regarding the security of CS systems. Recommends that CS be identified as a critical infrastructure in the national critical infrastructure protection strategy. Charts and tables.
