Book excerpt: As young Grace grows up, it becomes clear that she takes after her domineering grandmother, Madge - to the consternation of her mother Alice. Stubborn and headstrong, Grace enters into a dangerous relationship with Thomas, who turns out to be quite different to what she thought... When this ends in a dramatic and traumatic way, Grace goes to work away with her best friend Lucy, feeling as though Grandma Madge is guiding her to a better life. Through Lucy she meets Seth in very unusual circumstances, and decides not to tell her parents about him. Not yet anyway. She takes things slowly with him. Thomas hurt her badly, and she doesn't want to repeat the experience. Eventually, she trains to be a journalist, and runs into an old school friend, Jade, who has a new boyfriend - Thomas! Grace tells her everything that happened to her, then they plot together to get their revenge. The outcome of this pushes Grace into the spotlight, and her career goes from strength to strength. Seth is the steadying influence in her life, her knight in shining armour. She comes to realise he is the love of her life, and she can't let him get away. She marries him, knowing that her grandmother would approve. Maybe she even arranged for it to happen? It seems the ghosts of the past are up for causing a bit of mischief.
