Book excerpt: Nantucket is an island 30 miles south of Cape Cod, in Massachusetts, which, together with the small islands of Tuckernuck and Muskeget, constitutes the Town of Nantucket, as well as Nantucket County. In 1641, Nantucket Island was deeded by the English to Thomas Mayhew, a merchant in Watertown, Massachusetts, and his son, Thomas. In 1659, Thomas Mayhew, reserving a small part to himself, sold most of his interest to a group of nine investors, consisting of Tristram Coffin, Peter Coffin, Thomas Macy, Christopher Hussey, Richard Swain, Thomas Barnard, Stephen Greenleaf, John Swain and William Pike. This work focuses on the biographies and genealogies of these founders and early settlers of Nantucket. Includes an Appendix and Index.
