Book excerpt: Between 1988 and 1993, Fukuoka (sociology, Saitama U.) conducted 150 in-depth interviews with young ethnic Koreans permanently residing in Japan, known as Zainichi Koreans, most of whom are the offspring of Koreans who came to Japan around the time of WWII. The author deduces five types of ethnic orientation among the subjects of her study: pluralist, nationalist, individualist, naturalizing, and ethnic solidarity types. Part one examines case histories of ten Zainichi Koreans, giving two examples of each type. Part two consists of 12 case studies of second and third generation Zainichi Korean women.
