Book excerpt: Measurements of heat flow to air at subsonic velocities and at substantially constant Reynolds number show that the heat-transfer coefficient, based on the difference between the temperature of the heated wall and the adiabatic wall temperature, is independent of this difference. In order to determine the adiabatic wall temperature, recovery factors were measured at the pipe wall for adiabatic flow. The recovery factor averages 0.88 and is substantially independent of Mach number in the range from 0.2 to 1. The coefficient of heat transfer, based on the difference between the temperature of the heated wall and the man stagnation temperature of the stream, is not independent of this temperature difference unless the tempature tween stagnation temperature and mean stream temperature. The conventional heat-transfer coefficient various even more with temperature difference.
