Book excerpt: The International Joint Commission, which is charged with improving the environmental quality of the Great Lakes, has designated for specific remedial actions 43 Areas of Concern (AOCs) where the aquatic environment has been most severely degraded. This report summarizes information gathered over the past 28 years on the amount and timing of use by waterfowl in seven of those 43 AOCs (those AOCs in Canada along the southern Great Lakes which contain important habitat for staging waterfowl). It also provides comparable information on other important areas along the Great Lakes shore from the Bruce Peninsula to the Quebec border. In addition, a brief description of the nutritional and other habitat requirements of staging waterfowl is included. Information presented include habitat use by taxonomic group, overall trends, waterfowl counts by group, and survey sampling dates.
