Book excerpt: Mandatory physical fitness programs were first introduced in the Bellevue Fire Department in 1976, yet some members of the Department lack the fitness necessary to perform essential firefighting tasks. The goal of the Department and the purpose of this research was to examine successful physical fitness programs for firefighting and develop a new physical fitness program. A historical and descriptive research methodology was utilized which resulted in several recommendations for inclusion into a new physical fitness program. The research questions specifically examined included, 1) How important is physical fitness?, 2) What are the essential elements of a physical fitness program for firefighters?, 3) Should fitness testing be a part of the program?, and 4) Should age and gender standards be established?
