Book excerpt: This report provides an overview of various aspects of numerical simulation of the dynamics of impacting continuous bodies. Emphasis is placed on impact scenarios, wherein the loading conditions are sufficiently intense to produce large deformations and penetrations. Such events are characterized by loading and response times in the microsecond regime. Furthermore, the deformations are highly localized and are governed by properties of the materials within the affected region as opposed to the global characteristics of the structure in which they are contained. Selected two- and three-dimensional examples of high velocity penetration are presented. Practical aspects of performing large-scale simulations of penetration phenomena on modern supercomputers are discussed. Keywords: Penetration mechanics, High velocity impact, Kinetic energy penetration, Terminal ballistics.
