Multiple studies using qualitative designs have shown ineffective preparation. This study used a quantitative post-then methodology assessing whether the Health Professions Education and Training (HPET) course prepared senior nurse leaders to assume the novice educator role. The study was applied to 50 subjects with 35 respondents and 16 completing the survey in its entirety. The subjects rated 107 competencies using a Benner's five stages of proficiency Likert scale. The results show a 56% overall competency improvement with 40% of the competencies having no statistical significant improvement after the course. These results are similar to other qualitative studies, showing that more focus is needed to prepare the nurse educator. (Author Summary).
