Book excerpt: Our world has witnessed major changes in the last few decades; one of the most profound being within families. The family, though the smallest unit of a society is its most powerful unit. A long time ago, I learnt from a mentor of mine what I like to call the golden rule for change. He said, 'If a team is not doing well and the coach desires to build a better team, the first thing he ought to do is to take the team through the basics. Simply put, he should go back to the simple things like the passes, the rules and basic things the team needs to understand first. On that basis, he will see a strong team evolve. As simple as this looks, it has helped me in my consulting practice in the last two decades. When I have a client and consider the brief, I do not look for big and complex solutions. I would rather look out for what I call the 'missing puzzles' or the 'gaps'. It is interesting to know that it is little things that create the gaps and when the gap becomes too wide, a crisis occurs. However, the rule has always been that we should go back to the basics.
