Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared as a sequel to the College Board Educational Equality Project's "Academic Preparation for College: What Students Need To Know and Be Able To Do," this book examines curricular ideas, teaching strategies, arts learning rationales, and related issues. The arts are defined as separate fields of study which offer a distinctive contribution to high school students' preparation for college. Creating or performing art works, learning to analyze and evaluate art, and knowing art works of various periods and cultures can teach students to understand and pursue quality, to be expressive and responsive, to exercise their imaginations, and to be interested in the visions and imaginations of others. Teachers must help students develop the special knowledge, sensitivity, and skills that training in the arts require. Selected arts courses are presented to illustrate how students might achieve the goals of production and performance skills, abilities in analysis and evaluation, and knowledge of the cultural contexts and historical development of the arts. The development of outstanding arts courses and the utilization of arts education to assist students in achieving basic competencies in reading, writing, speaking, listening, mathematics, reasoning, and studying is described. Art teachers are encouraged to develop curricula which achieve and maintain excellence in arts education for all high school students. (JHP)
