Book excerpt: The approach used in this study is twofold: First, I consider the actual prospects of coal as a major alternative to oil, natural gas, and possibly nuclear power in the coming decades. Appraisals are made of how much coal is likely to be used and the specific forms this use will take....Second, having made such an appraisal for the U.S. coal industry, I then turn to its implications for Canadian customers. A key concern is whether traditional sources of coal from the United States will become "unavailable" as a result of chnages in U.S. coal and supply conditions.
