Book excerpt: The Combat Vehicle Command and Control (CVCC) research and development program addresses key issues associated with the automation of various command, control, and communications (C 3) functions for tanks through the use of soldier-in-the-loop distributed interactive simulation. The objectives of the research reported here were to (1) develop a methodology to assess the impact of an automated C3, system (CVCC) on the operational effectiveness of armor battalions, (2) assess the training requirements for CVCC, and (3) provide a test research plan and support package for conducting battalion-level CVCC research. Four groups, each consisting of 23 troops, completed a 1-week training and testing schedule that ended in two simulated combat scenarios. This effort used specially developed CVCC simulators and tactical operations center workstations located in the Close Combat Test Bed at Fort Knox, Kentucky. These simulation facilities supported both automated and manual data collection of mission/tactical performance and C3 performance during each combat scenario. Recommendations for methodological improvements and CVCC design modifications were identified. The findings presented here provide input for future research efforts in soldier-in-the-loop simulation, the design of CVCC equipment, the Army's training developments process, and evaluation of automated C3 systems for combat vehicles.
