Book excerpt: This manual establishes criteria and presents guidance for the selection, evaluation, and use of large-stone materials in construction. Construction with Large Stone summarizes the results of many years of experience in the selection and use of rock materials in all forms of engineered structures. As individual stone sizes increase as a function of design requirements, natural and man-made disparities and flaws in rock have an increasingly greater influence on performance and time dependent durability. As a result, the guidance in this manual was developed specifically to be applied on those projects requiring large riprap, jetty stone, and cap stone. However, the principles and guidance found in this manual may be applied to any stone requirements greater in size than concrete aggregate.
