Book excerpt: In the second chapter, we extend the Ben-Porath (1967) model to include partially transferable human capital and analyze the effects of the changes in transferability of human capital on wages and mobility. Specifically, we show that an increase in transferability of human capital is qualitatively consistent with recent trends in the U.S. labor market such as the increases in wage inequality and occupational mobility.
