Madame Bovary, a French Novel originally published in 1856 as Madame Bovary: Provincial Manners, is the debut novel of French writer Gustave Flaubert. The novel follows the main character as she lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Emma, a beautiful young woman, marries Charles Bovary after Charles's wife dies. She has a highly romanticized view of the world and craves beauty, wealth, passion, as well as high society. When the novel was first serialized, public prosecutors attacked the novel for obscenity. After Flaubert's acquittal, Madame Bovary became a bestseller. A seminal work of literary realism, the novel is now considered Flaubert's masterpiece, and one of the most influential literary works in history.
