Book excerpt: This publication is based on the findings of studies undertaken by the UNDP to evaluate its experiences of rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in a range of countries that have experienced internal conflicts and crises. The challenges facing the UNDP and other development agencies include: the rebuilding of war-torn societies, the reintegration of refugees, displaced persons and former combatants, the maintenance of peace once fighting has ceased, and the prevention of violence in areas of unrest. The report includes a number of case studies of countries where the focus of UNDP activities were at a national level, as well as situations where the activities were primarily regionally-based.
