Book excerpt: The book provides an analysis of the effect of migration on the empowerment of women in traditionally patriarchal societies in three Western Balkan countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia. The study focuses on the household unit and examines the positions of women with and without migration experience in their families. Research findings suggest that the effect of migration on the empowerment of women in three selected dimensions (socio-cultural, economic and domestic decision making) depends crucially on the personal ability of each individual woman to consider the migration experience in light of the complex interface of socio-economic factors in both home and host countries.
