Hungary has been affected by this problem in two ways. On the one hand, the Trianon Peace Treaty ended the minority status of Hungarians in neighboring countries. On the other hand, due to territorial annexations, Hungary itself did not become a pure nation-state; instead, it became host to significant numbers of minorities. The essays in this book discuss the most important questions dealing with the history of national minorities in Hungary between 1920 and 2000. It is a history that is not separate from the history of the surrounding majority society; yet, minority communities have their own stories and developmental trends which, in many cases, are unique.
