Book excerpt: The problem-centred interview (PCI) is a technique of qualitative interviewing that is used for collecting and reconstructing knowledge about "problems" (i.e., socially and individually relevant issues) from the perspective of interview partners in a discursive-dialogic way. Historically, it is an integrated methodical response to methodology debates of the 1970s in Germany and has since been widely used in mixed-methods research. The PCI is a theory-generating technique suggesting deductive, inductive, and abductive aspects by combining the openness of qualitative research with a reflexive exchange of social scientific prior knowledge and practical common-sense knowledge. As well-prepared experts and learning interview participants, researchers enter into a dialogue with respondents who are regarded as comprehensively knowledgeable and self-reflective research partners.
