Book excerpt: Healthy forests are critical to public health and the well-being of the 130 million people across the 20 states of the Northeast and Midwest and the District of Columbia (U.S. Census Bureau 2021). The 176 million acres of forest in this region provide clean water, wildlife habitat, recreation, jobs, forest products, and carbon storage (Oswalt and others 2019). Urban and community trees also conserve energy and mitigate stormwater runoff. These benefits from forests don’t happen by chance. State Forest Action Plans (SFAPs) guide the work of natural resource professionals to provide forest benefits for future generations. SFAPs provide an assessment of forest conditions and outline priorities and strategies to ensure healthy trees and forests into the future. They are updated at least every 10 years1 with input from partners and stakeholders. SFAPs are required for states to receive funding authorized by the Cooperative Forestry Assistance Act of 1978.This summary of 21 SFAPs covers the Northeast and Midwest region, shown in figure 1, and is a collaboration between the Northeast-Midwest State Foresters Alliance (NMSFA) and the U.S. Forest Service, Eastern Region.
