The main character, Mark Cots, a psychologist specializes in helping people who are battling depression and more specifically those who are contemplating suicide. After years of listening to people’s stories of gruesome tragedies he is pushed down a path of drugs, alcohol and his own fetish with suicide, just to cope with his job. After loosing his job, a divorce, and an addiction to prescription pills Mark is on a downward spiral until one day he finds his calling, helping young veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan cope with being back home.
