Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sport and Travel in the Northland of Canada The Historical Sketch of Exploration in North Canada was written by Mr. P. A. Renwick. To Mr. H. Elwes, I am indebted for the description of the Arctic coast butterflies shown in the coloured plate in the Appendix. Most of the photographs reproduced were taken by myself, but my acknowledgments are due to Captain Deville, surveyor-general of the Dominion of Canada, for permission to reproduce a few taken by Mr. J. W. Tyrrell, c.e., and to Mr. C. E. Mathers of Edmonton, Alberta, for permission to reproduce a few others. In the endeavour to represent the sound of Eskimo names and other words, both in the text of the book and in the vocabulary given in the Appendix, the system of spelling adopted by the Royal Geographical Society has been followed so far as it was found practicable, but, to avoid the frequent duplication of consonants, the quantity of vowels has in many cases been indicated by the usual signs.
