Book excerpt: The stratospheric wind, temperature, and isobaric height conditions of the Northern Hemisphere during the period from July 1957 to December 1958, January to June 1958, and July to December 1958 were statistically studied. Three-month seasonal averages of these quantities and of the covariances between them were computed and are presented in the form of hemispheric maps. Zonal averages of various important quantities are also given in tables. General discussions of the results are given briefly. These monographs are devoted to the observational description of the lower stratospheric conditions for the IGY. We present here the geographical distribution of several statistical quantities which might be useful for the understanding of the general circulation in the lower stratosphere. In spite of some uncertainties in analysing the maps over regions of the hemisphere lacking sufficient observations, it would be reasonable to assume that the major features of the stratospheric circulation are well represented in this study as a first attempt. We also present the vertical and latitudinal dependence of the zonal mean values of several meteorological quantities.
