Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syphilis and the Nervous System, for Practitioners, Neurologists and Syphilologists In the six years since the appearance of the first edition of "Syphilis and the Nervous System," important new discoveries have been added to this subject. The discovery of the Spirochaete pallida by Schaudinn, whose premature death has been a great loss to scientific investigation, the beginning and development of cytodiagnosis, as well as the globulin examination of the spinal fluid, and finally the application of the complement-deviation method for the diagnosis of syphilis by Wassermann and A. Neisser and the utilization of these methods by neurologists, must deeply affect the theme "Syphilis and the Nervous System." The discussion concerning lues nervosa in the first edition was only briefly touched upon in a purely clinical manner. It now demands a thorough consideration, also the gradually increasing number of cases of recovery or of a quiescence of the symptom complex of paresis warns us that we, mutatis mutandis, must reconstruct our symptomatology and prognosis of that disease as we have already done for tabes. I have endeavored in the second edition to set forth these results of investigation and practice. Since the entire arrangement of the material has proven to be a practical one, I have found no occasion to change the outline in its entirety. The last six years have brought to me an abundant material of syphilogenetic diseases. I have used this material for illustration whenever it has served to bring out new view-points and in the discussion of old and new questions of contention helped to shed new light. Notwithstanding, the book maintains the character which I have desired to impart to it from the beginning, namely, the stamp of the personal, individual experiences of a clinician.
