The loans that he speaks of must have been raised for temporary purposes, and if secured by documents similar to the worthless papers he was so ready to deposit in the more desperate days of his career, fortunate it is for the parties interested that he, by some lucky hit in copper, tin, or spelter, realised a profit and repaid them. But it seems difficult to suppose that those who were in close connection with this man, knowing his antece dents, both in trading and speculation, could be wholly blind to his proceedings; and if this were so, there are others to blame besides himself.
