Book excerpt: The literature review was conducted to examine the effects athletic participation has on the academic achievement of high school students. Student grades, attendance, behavior, and college readiness are affected positively by participation. Performance comparisons in the classroom and testing between those who participate and those who do not were reviewed. Drawbacks and barriers of participation for the students as well as the school are discussed. Educators can be better equipped to promote involvement, inclusion and opportunities for students. Counselors should be informed on specifics for student-athletes to aid in their development. Recommendations for future research are addressed.
