Book excerpt: The boy liked his life as a wood and water joey at Yamboorah cattle station and the company of his dog Rags. After the boss's gift of a saddle he wanted to learn how to ride, to be a real cattleman. He did learn how and rode with the men to muster where he found a lame roan colt which he desperately wanted to save. Helped by two aboriginal maids he tries to save the colt but ends up endangering all their lives in a searing bush fire.
