Book excerpt: Who is Mulla Nasruddin ? Is he a real person ? Or is he a character born out of someone's imagination and shaped after the best wits or all times and climes ? We may never know the exact answers to these questions, but whoever he be, his wit and wisdom have captivated the whole world. Many countries claim Mulla Nasruddin as their native. Some say he was Persian. The Turks claim that the Mulla's mortal remains are laid to rest in their country and even hold an annual festival in his memory. The Greeks and Indians look upon Nasruddin as an integral part of their folklore. So do the people of Sicily and the Arabs. In 1970s the then Soviet Union installed a statue in his honor at Bukhara, Uzbekistan.Nasruddin, as such, belong to entire mankind. For he embodies the best of humor that was conceived with his great wits. We present a few stories here based on the his folklore in India. Note that the tales of Mulla are often criticized for the smack more of "getting away with something" or "outsmarting someone, often a person with lesser intellect", so the tales might not be suitable for very young impressionable children. However teenagers and above will find the tales a good light read.
