Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His estrangement, not only from the world, but from himself as well, has become one of the more pervasive characteristics of modern man. Youth with its subculture and counterculture, minorities, alienated from society and from other minorities, generations driven apart by conflicts in lifestyles-all are manifestations of this contemporary problem. Such a topic, addressed by the 1971 Institute of Pastoral Psychology, lends itself to, and indeed requires, an interdisciplinary approach. As in precious Institutes and their published proceedings, invaluable contributions have been made by the behavioral and social sciences, theology, philosophy, and the law to an understanding of the problems encountered, not only in pastoral work, but also in the broader areas of human life and its associations. The present volume views alienation as a many-faceted malaise, having its remote roots in philosophy and religion, and more recently in the writings of political and social theorists. This general historical background is followed by an exploration of contemporary influences, such as war and international tension. Next, three focal points are given extended treatment-alienation in the political and social order, the alienation of youth, and religious alienation. Not ignored are selected manifestations of alienation affecting the aged, the poor, and those set apart by their homosexuality. Finally, representatives from four differing disciplines suggest what might be modern man's responses to his sense of estrangement. This volume, Number Seven in the Pastoral Psychology Series, will undoubtedly appeal to a wider readership than that which the Institute originally intended.
